The Deo Family Charitable Foundation

The Deo Family Charitable Foundation, established in 2020, is dedicated to serving the Fijian community residing in Queensland, Australia. According to the 2021 census, the diaspora comprises approximately 11,000 individuals of both Fijian Indian and iTaukei heritage living in Queensland. This number is anticipated to grow as the government seeks to address labour shortages by welcoming individuals from Pacific nations.

Since its inception, the Foundation has orchestrated a range of events aimed at fostering cultural appreciation and community cohesion. These include observances like Girmit Remembrance Day, Fiji Independence Day Celebrations, Fijian Cultural Exhibitions, a radio talk show titled “Mere Safar Ki Yaadein” (Memories of My Journey) on Radio Brisvaani, and engaging sessions called “Coffee with JD.”

These events play a vital role in strengthening our collective identity and showcasing the richness of our cultural heritage. Over the past few years, the Foundation has made significant strides in promoting Fijian identity and gaining recognition at various levels of government in Queensland. The success of these events is evident in their diverse audience, contributing to a heightened awareness of our cultural diversity in the broader multicultural society.
