These awards acknowledge individuals of Fiji origin residing in Queensland who have significantly contributed to our community, whether in Fiji or Queensland, Australia.
Girmit Remembrance Day holds significance for Fiji Indians worldwide, serving as a poignant reminder of the struggles, dreams, and aspirations of the 60,500-plus indentured labourers amidst formidable challenges.
It is a day dedicated to honouring their resilience and perpetuating their memory for generations.
The Fiji Girmit Foundation Australia was established in 2021 by former residents of Fiji, now residing in Brisbane, along with descendants of Girmitiyas. This foundation has been created to raise awareness about the historical period known as “Girmit”. It achieves this goal by organizing Girmit-related events and offering accurate information through its social media platforms and website.
The foundation aspires to collaborate with similar organizations across the globe to acknowledge and educate younger generations about this significant chapter in history. Additionally, it aims to petition the government and local authorities to allocate memorial grounds or spaces dedicated to honouring our Girmityas, where historical artifacts can be preserved for the benefit of future generations.
Among its various endeavours, a central focus will be commemorating Girmit Remembrance Day, establishing chapters in key Australian cities, emphasising Sydney and Melbourne, and observing this day concurrently.
